So you say it’s your birthday, It’s my birthday too, yeah!

Yes! It’s my birthday, and what did I get? A summer cold. Last evening I had a headache and a fever. By the time I went to bed, I had a sore throat and kept coughing myself awake all night.

I’m still feeling wretched this morning, but that’s okay. My family loves me and they are taking care of me.

It’s kind of reminiscent of the year I turned 11. It was one of the last days of school, and we were taking a field trip to a local river. We walked to the river and talked about rivers, and land formations, and I don’t even know what else. I was feeling horrible. I sat down every chance I got, and we eventually ended up at a local beach spot on this river where we sat to have lunch. Afterwards, the teachers allowed us all to go into the river to play and splash about. I just laid on the beach, miserable. I had a fever, I was lethargic, and I had a few really annoying bug bites that I’d gotten the day before.
I napped and was occasionally woken by dripping friends asking me to come play, but I told them to “Go away” and “Leave me alone”.
The teachers grew concerned and rounded everyone up. We began the long trek back to school… okay, it wasn’t that far, but when you’re horrendously ill, it was agonizing.

Upon returning to the school, I was brought into the office. The school nurse took one look at me, saw the worst of the bug bites on my face and told me, “Those aren’t bug bites. Those are chicken pox.”
I sat in the office and listened as they called parents of my classmates to let them know that they’d been exposed. A couple of the moms insisted that their kids spend time with me and hug on me as much as possible, which made me further miserable.

My Mom tried to feed me, but I had chicken pox in my throat. We went shopping, and my Mom bought me many jars of baby food. That year I didn’t get a birthday cake, I got a jar of strained plums. Momma did mix in a little bit of oatmeal to change the consistency for me.

I need to be feeling better by this weekend, that’s when hubby and I will be celebrating.

I’ll leave you with a pic of baby Judy celebrating my first birthday as my Daddy watches over me.
